David Shrigley’s Photographs
I’ve been a fan of David Shrigley for years but I’ve only just discovered his photography. Its very cool to see how his style works in this medium.

The image above was used as the cover for Malcolm Middleton’s ‘A Brighter Beat’ album. And I’m guessing, was also the inspiration for the video.

Apperently there’s going to be a G.I. Joe film, with Snake Eyes played by Ray Park. You’ll have to wait until 14 August 2009 to see if its any good. I’ve got a hunch it’ll be poor. But I hope I’m wrong.

No commentsI Met The Walrus
I found this amazing animation of a Lennon interview. I’m determined to do a similar style animation soon. It’s so amazing. The story behind it is that in 1969 when John and Yoko were in Toronto as part of their bed-in for peace tour, a 14 year old Beatles fan with a tape recorder called Jerry Levitan knocked on every door of the hotel where he knew Lennon was staying until he found him at which point Lennon was good enough to give him a 40 minute interview. The tape of the interview gathered dust for around 35 years until Jerry Levitan met a young animator called Josh Raskin whose work impressed him sufficiently for him to allow Josh to make a film to accompany an edited section of this Lennon tape. (Thanks to Adam Buxton for the background blurb).

No commentsMagnetic Movie
The secret lives of invisible magnetic fields are revealed as chaotic ever-changing geometries. All action takes place around NASA’s Space Sciences Laboratories, UC Berkeley, to recordings of space scientists describing their discoveries. Actual VLF audio recordings control the evolution of the fields as they delve into our inaudible surroundings, revealing recurrent ‘whistlers’ produced by fleeting electrons. Are we observing a series of scientific experiments, the universe in flux, or a documentary of a fictional world?

Bon Iver is the stage and recording name of indie folk singer-songwriter Justin Vernon. The name, Bon Iver, is a bastardization of the French, bon hiver (good winter). He independently released his debut album, For Emma, Forever Ago in 2007, which was recorded while spending four months alone in a remote cabin in Wisconsin.

For the last couple of days I’ve been listening to ‘John Peel: Right Time Wrong Speed’ and its reminded me how much I miss John Peels radio show. One summer I listened to nearly every show. I was working for a magazine at the time doing 3pm - 11pm, fortunately everyone there was like minded so John Peel was on the radio every night.
So this desktop is inspired by the late, great, John Peel - and one of my favorite quotes from him.

No comments‘Free’ Pitches Getting Out of Hand
I’m just back from the Pub where I had a few drinks and a chat with a couple of fellow designers. The subject of the ‘Free Pitch’ culture came up. I was told about a horror story involving Stirling council inviting 114 design consultancies to pitch for the layout of a quarterly business newsletter; which has a £50,000 budget over three years. I just read the article from ‘The Drum’ website for myself. This is pretty nuts, its totally damaging to our industry. Here’s the whole article from The Drum’s website: linkygoodness

TunnelVision Lens
I’m so excited - I’ve just redeemed the voucher I was awarded for my Lomo Home of the Day by ordering the TunnelVision Lens from the Lomography Shop. Thanks to the nifty magnetic ring system I can use it on my Holga 120N and my Lomo LC-A. Its primary job is wide angle conversion - effectively multiplying the lens’s focal length by 0.45. So, the Lomo LC-A’s 32mm lens is blown out to an approximate 15mm with the TunnelVision capping it off. The Holga’s lens moves from a 60mm to 27mm view - which in medium format terms is roughly equivalent to the Lomo’s 15mm view. The macro portion of the TunnelVision can be unscrewed to enable its up-close-and-very-personal capabilities.
Plus it comes with a healthy warrenty - In the words of the Lomo Shop “The warranty on this guy? - 10 long years, sucka”.
Check out the tasty shots:

If you haven’t bought the latest copy of The Drum then you won’t have seen this. I nearly had a breakdown when designing this - Illustrator unexpectedly quit and I lost about an hours work at around 11.30pm. I don’t know anything about this book, other than the cover is astounding and the self portrait is by Duane M. Palyka. I’ll bet Duane lost most of his hair from the stress of trying to create images with only 256 colour - what a tit. I do miss the days when the word ‘computer’ had to be in a digital typeface - those were simpler times.

re:vision is a range of bracelets/cuffs by Craig Arnold. They are recycled from old lenses and are all ‘one-offs’. A very original idea I think. They are all around AU $200. They can be found at oyemodern, everything else there seems pretty average in comparison.

The new album ‘Love To Make Music To’ is due for release 09/06/2008. The albums flag ship track ‘Fair Weather Friends’, shown in the above clip, reminds me a little of The Go Team. The videos pretty cool too. Some of his more experimental stuff is pretty hard going. There are a few tracks that sound like early UK rave, but don’t let that put you off, lots of the stuff I’ve heard is as good as the above.

The logo for the 2012 Olympics has been the subject of much debate. Well, not so much debate, just people saying its shit. I have to agree I’m not a fan, so when I seen this photo it made me chuckle. No commentsTokyoflash
Tokyoflash are makers of bizarre digital watches that look like they’re straight out of Akira. They’ve been around for a few years now and they continually design newer and weirder watches all the time. Each style of watch has its own unique way of telling the time. I only know one person who has bought one and they have given up on using it as a real watch. Even although it could be argued the watches are a victim of form over function I still think they’re pretty sweet. There are now a few stockists in the UK so it makes buying one a less painful process.

The Tesla Roadster looks like it might be the first really good electric car. 0-60 in 3.9 seconds! And it’s not even some hybrid half-measure, its a fully electric car. Its already in production in the US and we’ll get a special allocation of 250 euro-spec roadsters in Spring 09. However, its a bit weird with no engine noise.

Solaris FG Plus is a very cheap 36 exp 200iso film made by Ferrania Technologies. It has what can only be described as an unusual colour pallet. With a little over exposure it gives a washed-out yellowish 70’s look. Great Lo-Fi film. It’s on sale in Poundland for, you guessed it, £1. I’m buying more!
